Welcome To The Tech Podcast Party

Thursday, May 24th, 2007

Podshow recently announced that they are starting a Tech channel on their network. Their new PodShow TECH channel will be helmed by former PC Mag writer John C. Dvorak. Congrats John!

I think its a testament to the growth of new media when a former naysayer such as Dvorak embraces the industry. Back in 2003 John showed a remarkable disdain for blogs in general. John has also put forth the notion that tagging posts falls into the category of, “…one of these crackpot ideas.” (To Tag Or Not To Tag, That Is The Question)

When podcasting came along John was unimpressed to say the least. How could a medium that relies on as John stated, “…the trendy, overhyped iPod,” survive? The visionary statement from John that podcasting would eventually take its place beneath whittling and fingernail clipping as sources of entertainment is certainly a revealing one. Once again, we’d like to congratulate John on his new postion. We’re glad that he has come around to see the light.

We look forward to seeing what the PodShow TECH channel brings to the party. In the meantime, you can head over to a RawVoice community known as the Tech Podcast Network and find a multitude of great information, education and discussion on all things tech.

There are 63 shows and counting on the Tech Podcast Network. We could have a lot more there in terms of volume but we’ve got some basic listing requirements that insure that the shows that do appear on the network meet a certain level of quality. You can also check out one of our Tech Podcast Round Tables to learn about some hot tech topics and find out more about the Tech Podcast Network.

We’ll apologize in advance for including a crackpot idea like tags over on TechPodcasts.com to help you find the technology information you’re looking for. I guess you could say that we’re just silly like that ;)

NYC Podcast Media Buyers Meetings Re-Cap

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007

I have a pile of notes from the various meetings I had in NYC with a significant number of media buyers. I am not going to share all of them, but let me cover a couple of things.

  • Podcast Reporting Statistics are going to be held to a higher standard
  • Verification – Verification – Verification
  • Media Buyers do not understand the levels of Audience Engagement
  • All were worried about Ads run on shows with Explicit Content
  • Some buyers finally understood the power of host read endorsements

I am not going to discuss my presentation as it is a company proprietary secret, but I was told a significant number of times that our approach was applaudable and unlike anything they had ever seen.

I would like to think it is because I don’t pull any punches, or I don’t over hype the space. What it boils down to is that my team understand the new media space and we have 24 months of podcast advertising data to backup our assertions on how we have delivered ROI to those companies we represent.

I will leave you with this. You can have the best technology in the world but if it is not effective in generating ROI they don’t care if the technology slices and dices, or is hyped by a talking head or even exaggerated in a press release, if you can’t deliver measurable ROI then you might as well go home.

RawVoice CEO Quoted In Wall Street Journal

Monday, May 14th, 2007

Today’s Wall Street Journal contains an article on the front page of their Journal Report section titled, “How To Be A Star In A YouTube World.”

The article focuses on what it takes to stand out at a time when social media has become so prevalent. Our own CEO Todd Cochrane was interviewed for the piece and they’ve included Todd’s opinion on one of the traits necessary for success as an independent media producer.

“Shows that are consistent have a tendency to grow more than those that aren’t,” says Todd Cochrane, a podcaster and founder of RawVoice Inc., which builds podcasting sites for individuals and companies.

Consistency is definitely very important in building and keeping an audience. Independent media producers need to be consistent in their content as well as their production schedule in order to build a steady following.

Also quoted in the article is Mignon Fogarty, whose Grammar Girl podcast is a member of our Blubrry community.

“Grammar Girl,” a popular podcast about proper language usage, gets an update every Thursday like clockwork. That regular schedule is crucial to the podcast’s creator, Mignon Fogarty. “When the shows I listen to don’t come out, I get very frustrated,” she says.

Once again we agree. If podcasters are looking to build a solid brand around their shows then they need to keep the audience in mind. Of course, finding the right balance for a publishing schedule is really a show to show thing.

We’re not pushing any hard and fast rules here, but we do recommend that you tune in to your audience to make sure that their expectations on the timing of your shows are set properly.
